Searching the internet, you will find a plethora of content highlighting the working from home benefits. In this quick guide, we will dive into some of the less apparent benefits based on my experience of working remotely for over 7 years.
Let’s quickly go through the obvious benefits of working from home.
The lack of a commute to the office is an enormous benefit for several reasons. It’s better for the environment. You save money because fuel and public transport are not cheap anymore. You can put the time commuting to better use, like exercising or going on a daily walk.
Avoiding negative personalities in the office
When working in an office, the mix of personalities can cause friction. Some people thrive on being negative and want to try and bring people down to their level. Usually, this is because they’re unhappy with their job or life and want everyone around them to be miserable too.
This happens more than you think in an office environment.
You cannot choose who you work with. Still, when working from home, you can keep them at a distance, and you do not have to work within their negativity for 8 hours every single working day. It gets exhausting working with people like this.
Improving your mental health
Leading on from working with negative colleagues is just an overall improvement on your mental health. Yes, working alone can be isolating, but there are plenty of solutions you can introduce into your workday.
Being micromanaged can be mentally exhausting with the pressure of having someone monitor your work and watch over you.
Still, when you’re in the office, there is a tendency for managers to discourage independent decision-making – they can hear everything! You’ve been hired to perform a role.
You usually communicate over tools like Slack when you’re working from home. You can take your time to respond and leave status messages when you’re focusing on a piece of work.
More focus time and improved productivity
One of the most significant issues when working in an office is being so accessible to invite into meetings. For some people, meetings are a way to feel important. For some, they just want to micromanage and slow down productivity.
When working from home, most companies will use Slack for communication. You can answer in your time and leave status messages that you are focusing on a piece of work.
It’s also easier to reject meetings because there is no face-to-face communication and the struggles with saying no.
If the company truly embraces working from home, you can create a routine where you are only working when you are the most productive. If you have lots of family distractions early in the morning, then starting your work later in the morning will be better for the company and you.
Spending more time with loved ones
As briefly touched upon, having not travelling to and from work means you will have more time to spend with loved ones.
Go for a stroll with your wife or husband and spend quality time together. Maybe you can take your children to school, or pick them up. Perhaps you can meet your parents for a coffee.
These are the biggest working from home benefits from speaking with clients. If you need help finding remote work, then please get in touch.
