Traditionally, computer-based jobs took place in an office environment. With the emergence of the internet and new technology, over the last ten years, the opportunity to work from home has become more commonplace.
To work remotely, you are using a laptop and can work from anywhere there’s an internet connection. You could work from the comfort of your home, in a coffee house or co-working space. Remote working is based on the concept that work does not need to be done in a specific place to be executed successfully.
A few advantages of remote work are not having to commute, fewer distractions and working from the comfort of home. The disadvantages are that it can be isolating and it’s difficult to disconnect from work.
Some remote workers prefer to work and travel, and while this comes with its own challenges, you have the freedom to work from anywhere.
Remote work options
So, are you seriously considering quitting the office and working from home, but not sure what options are available?
Remote jobs can come in different forms: you could be a contractor, working on short term contracts for a specific company, either part time or full time. You could be a full-time employee working for a company but your work location is remote.
Both options give you a smaller amount of freedom and flexibility compared with freelancing, but what is more important to many is a regular income, over not knowing when freelance clients will process your invoice.
Freelance work is what a person does for themselves instead of a being employed by company and can involve client work for organisations. A freelancer is essentially self-employed and work comes from all over the employment sector.
