About the author
There was a time when finding the best jobs to work from home without a degree was impossible. That has changed, more companies are looking for people with skills over qualifications.
Of course, to go through a degree, you have to spend countless hours learning, resulting in being focused and determined. These are the skills many companies want in their employees, so it’s understandable why a degree has been a factor when hiring.
That said, there are a growing number of remote jobs, which do not require a degree, and in this article, we go through the best jobs to work from home.
The writer of this article does not have a degree and never went to university. Yet for 6+ years, has worked remotely in numerous roles within small to large companies.
Virtual assistant
More remote companies are looking at virtual assistants to help with the running of the business. The role can be very varied, but most of the tasks will be administrative in nature. While working directly with the founder or management team, the tasks include writing up emails, inputting and gathering data.
It’s a remote job that plays an essential part in keeping a business running.
Quality assurance
While you will need a technical background, the role of a Quality Assurance Analyst (or any non-engineer QA job title) does not require a degree. You must have an eye for detail, familiar with web accessibility and understand the QA processes.
Being able to learn software quickly and understand engineering terminology is an advantage, but not essential.
Customer support
This type of role appears in many different job titles, but, the focus is on helping the customer with their enquiries and support requests.
If you have worked in a call centre environment, then this would be a good option. All of the communication is by email or through the support desk software like Freshdesk and Live Agent. Having experience of these types of browser-based applications will increase your chances of being hired.
Social media manager
For entry-level social media jobs, you do not need a degree, but, a level of knowledge on the social networks and their algorithms is essential. Being able to create content with a strong call-to-action, to drive people to the website is a skill most employers are going to be looking for.
In the age of social media, it feels like everyone is an expert, so having a proven background in getting results will help you stand out.
Content creator
No degree is needed for content creator jobs, but, you must be experienced in the industry the company focuses on. Most people will focus on writing content, but, if you can also create podcasts and videos, the chances of you being hired will increase.
Community manager
The role will be to bring the audience together and help them. Being a good communicator, and familiar with community platforms like Facebook Groups will be advantageous. No degree needed, but, knowing the audience niche and industry, will stand you amongst other candidates.
Video editor
With the increase in videos and ads on the likes of Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, more companies are looking for creative video editors.
Being proficient in video editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro will be the skills required by employers. Along with the ability to create an engaging video that sells products and services.
Project manager
In the next 12-24 months, we are going to see an explosion of project manager roles, why? Covid-19 has resulted in more employees working from home – they are going to need people to drive projects forward and make sure company goals are met.
Good organisers who have experience using project planning software like Jira and Teamwork are going to be in demand. Companies will need to bring their teams together and have someone driving the projects to the end goal.
Translator
No degree needed but, as more businesses become global due to the internet, they will need someone fluent in two or more languages.
Languages like Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese alongside English are going to make you employable, so use this to your advantage. Companies will want documents translating, and communication as the world becomes more connected from home.
Degree is not essential
At this point, it is worth mentioning that many remote jobs do not require degrees. Companies are realising, experience and skills are important when it comes to hiring remote workers. This is because they want someone to fit straight into the role.
Hiring a candidate because they have a degree, with no experience makes no sense, as training can be time-consuming and costly in a remote work environment.
